Your New Role…
At CNN Digital, the way we tell stories is just as important as the stories themselves. Whether it’s breaking news, investigative journalism, or enterprise storytelling, our visual journalism breaks down stories for audiences in unique and interesting ways. The diversity of approaches allows us to better inform our audiences with essential and engaging news storytelling.
We are looking for an Interactive Developer who will help produce visual narratives and storytelling across our website and off-platform like our apps and social, working as part of our Special Projects team — from graphics and interactives to emerging storytelling forms like AR + motion graphics. The person in this role will work across the different digital editorial verticals to help shape and build visual narratives and coverage, while also collaborating with a team of visual editors, journalists, developers and designers across the organization. This is an exciting hands-on role, where you’ll have the opportunity to build out projects and help shape story ideas. The position is based in NYC or Atlanta.
CNN’s Special Projects team: Part of the wider CNN Visuals team, Special Projects are a core team of editors and creative technologists that champion our most ambitious visual journalism and build frameworks for how we do special projects across the Visuals teams and at CNN. This group also takes the lead on building out a more expansive kit of visual storytelling tools — pulling from our best work across all the Visuals teams, templatizing it, and allowing us to more easily design and publish creative, audience-driven digital journalism.
Your Role Accountabilities…
Work with visual editors, news desk editors, writers, other developers and designers to build visual storytelling projects using JavaScript, HTML and CSS using existing tools and templates
Lead technical development of medium to longer-term projects, working with other developers on the team when needed
Helping to shape and build-out a technical and design roadmap to templatize our most successful experiments and storytelling patterns, working closely with Product partners to align with CMS development
Collaborate with the Art Department, Data & Graphics and Photo teams to refine standards and best practices for storytelling forms including data visualizations, interactives, photography, illustrations, and animations
Works to iterate on our existing tools, and works with the team to create news ones when necessary
Develop and maintains a firm understanding of the larger technical infrastructure of CNN Digital, working with colleagues in other departments to find better ways to integrate the team’s work within our growing suite of products
Maintains an open line of communication with project collaborators to ensure shared understanding of concepts and deadlines
Qualifications & Experience…
Candidates should be highly proficient in modern web development technologies and workflows (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Git). Additionally, you’ll have some combination of editing experience, data analysis (R, Python, Node, etc.), experience with more advanced JS libraries (React, three.js, etc), or mapping and graphics skills (Illustrator, AI2html, QGIS, Mapbox)
You should be a quick learner, eager to adopt new tools and methods
Attention to detail, strong communication skills, and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment are crucial
Interest in the Global news agenda and experimenting in new types of Visual Storytelling a definite plus
Interface design experience is also a huge plus, as is past experience working in news media
The ability to work on a team is a must, collaboration is key on these types of projects, where you will be working on both small and large sized teams
Experience building designs systems and component libraries is also desirable

The Legal Bits…
In compliance with local law, we are disclosing the compensation, or a range thereof, for roles in locations where legally required. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors, including but not limited to external market data, internal equity, location, skill set, experience, and/or performance. Base pay is just one component of Warner Bros. Discovery’s total compensation package for employees. Pay Range: $72,208.00 - $134,100.00 salary per year. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards. In addition, Warner Bros. Discovery provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays and sick time and vacation.
